Celebrate 25 Years Of Zumba
17 April, 2026
In 2001, Zumba was invented by the humble Columbian, Beto Perez. He began teaching dance to people who could not speak his language, using the universal language of body language. He created an easy to learn dance model with easy-to-follow choreography and movement cueing.
Originally called Rumbacize (Rumba meaning Party combined with exercise), the name was then changed to Zumba, for it’s energetic sound, perfectly describing the class vibe and because he liked the character Zorro.
The traditional Zumba dance class is a high energy, fast paced, cardio workout to Latino music and dance genres such as Merengue, Regaeton, Cumbia and Salsa. However, over the years Zumba has embraced almost every single type of cultural dance around the world. Many classes have belly dancing, ballroom dances like Flamenco, Cha Cha, Hip Hop, Pop music, Bachata, Carribean beats like Soca and more.
Zumba has grown to cater for more people of various ages, abilities and fitness levels. There is a Zumba class for everyone and their fitness needs:
- Strong Nation a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) model for cardio using body weight for muscle conditioning
- Zumba Lift and Zumba Toning with weights for cardio and muscle building
- Zumba Step for cardio
- Zumba Seanto- for seated dancers
- Aqua Zumba – in the pool
- Zumba Kids (7-11years), Zumba Kids Jr (4-6 years) and Zumbini (0-4 years)
- Zumba Gold – low impact, slower pace.
You can find your class at www.zumba.com.au.
To celebrate Zumba’s 25th anniversary, and co-incidentally, International Dance Day, Carin Clegg is holding a special Zumba Gold class at 9am online via zoom :

and 11am at Gosford 50 Plus Leisure and Learning Centre, on Wednesday 29th April 2026. This class is free for all newbies.
Zumba Gold is the easier and more accessible type of dance class suitable for the older active adult, those new to dance or fitness or people with disability and neurodiversity. Dancers are encouraged to participate at their own pace, just do the arms or legs, use a chair to balance or sit and dance, or have a breather as needed.
Zumba Gold caters to the more mature music tastes too, with a bit of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Disco, Swing, Belly Dancing, Tango, Country, thrown in the mix.
Dance is so good for the soul. It is how we connect with our bodies and each other. It makes us smile and express how we feel. It helps regulate our emotions and keeps us fit and healthy. It feels so good to move to the music and makes us feel so alive.
Grab your friends for a laugh and a boogie, express your unique style and find your flow on the Zumba Gold dance floor!
