Food Insurance Policy
I just harvested my first bunch of bananas and am patiently waiting for them to ripen. Do you remember when bananas were super expensive beacause of the cyclone in Queensland? Over 15 years on we are experiencing a simmilar scenario- more expensive food due to extreme weather and many people have been predicting this for decades.
This is why growing and sharing home grown food is the best food security or insurance policy we can have. We have lost so much food knowledge as a society that we need to start to relearn everything about our food- what the plant looks like, what grows best in your climate and for each season, how to seed save, when to harvest and how to store an abundant harvest.
There is so much to learn that you can't possible know it all. But starting young, learning from mistakes and sharing our knowledge is the best we can do for our next generation to eat healthy and be healthy.
So go on, inspire us all and share what you/ your friends'family grow in the garden on our Bright Bods Group!

Recipe of the Month
Fresh Fish Cakes
Fresh fish is devine when replacing your standard canned fish in this recipe. So make them for a special treat for someone you love.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh fish such as ling, barramundi or salmon cut into 4 peices
- 1 small potato
- 1/2 400g can butter beans (drained)
- 1 egg
- Chopped fresh herbs: chives, parsley, dill
- 1 Lemon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Peel the potato (or leave unpeeled for a rustic texture) and cut into 2cm pieces
- Put a pot of water on to boil and boil the potato until soft.
- In a steamer above the potato add the fish whilst the potato is cooking and steam until tender (usually about 10 minutes).
- Drain the potato, add the beans to the pot and mash with a potato masher.
- In a large bowl beat the egg, add herbs, a squeeze of lemon juice, salt, pepper and fish. Mix well with a fork to break up the fish.
- Allow to cool until you can handle the mixture and roll the mixture into fish cakes about 5cm wide by 1.5 cm thick.
- Roll the fish cakes in bread crumbs
- Place a pan on medium heat. When hot add enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan and shallow fry the fish cakes until golden brown on both sides.
- Serve with a garden salad and a squeeze of lemon.
