It’s that time of year… celebrations and parties begin as one year closes and another opens…
There are so many rich moments to savour. Laughing with a co-worker, sharing the delight of a dazzling Christmas display, relaxing around a meal with friends or family. Embracing all of Christmas, being present and sharing with others is the richest way I’ve celebrated the season. Food has been a beautiful part, an accompaniment.
Here are some food tips to enjoy this season:
Notice your food and enjoy with others
Try mindfulness: Look, smell and taste your food. Stop and think about where it came from, who prepared it. Appreciating enriches.
Notice how you feel during and after your food. We can all eat a little more. This can help you decide whether to stop or keep going.
Gatherings: hosting or bringing food
Try medium sized dinner plates. This helps have amounts that will make you feel good too and prevent waste! You can always have seconds!
Embrace colour, texture and flavour: Using a variety of fruits, veggies, cheese, nuts and meats looks appealing and is also delish!
Some food ideas are:
An antipasto platter with olives, marinated or pickled vegetables such as mushrooms, gerkins/cucumber and capsicum
Adding nuts or fruit to salads and meals! e.g. pomegranate seeds in a Waldorf Salad or grated apple to the coleslaw
Crisp up the cheese platter with thinly sliced, crunchy pear and apple cheeks.
Nibble on fresh and crunchy veggie sticks with delicious dips like spinach and cashew or pumpkin hommous.
Offer a cold fruit salad with pineapple mint or edible flowers
Cold and frozen…
Cool down with a refreshing snack - try freezing fruit like orange slices, grapes, berries.
Create home-made frozen yoghurt or try frozen fruit kebabs!
Add festive ice cubes, mineral water, mint and frozen fruit to drinks. It’s festive and punchy!
Sip water between your drinks and enjoy it all
Get Active with Gift Giving
Active gifts are a great way to keep everyone moving, have some laughs and make some great memories together
Some ideas are bats, rackets, balls of any type, Frisbees, skipping ropes, hula hoops, boogie boards, snorkelling gear, exercise kits, bands and weight sets, helmets, gloves, shoes, padding, bikes and bike maintenance kits, the skies the limit!
Classes for activities or sports like dancing, gymnastics, circus, pilates, soccer, tennis
Family adventure tours- walks, bike rides, or water sports like sailing or kayaking
We hope you and your family have a blessed, safe and happy Christmas. We hope to see or connect with you in the New Year!
